Angela Merkel consoles Nicolas Sarkozy — the other half of “Merkozy” — as the French president holds back a fit of madness-induced laughter after learning that his country’s coveted AAA credit rating was downgraded to a new American low, AA+. While eight other countries also saw their ratings sink, the downgrade was a hard blow Sarkozy — three months ahead of an election — as the opposition Socialists seized an opportunity to bash the first-term president.
